Building Your Resume

Looking for a job near your piece of Newport News VA real estate, but are not having a lot of luck? It could be that at least from the perspective of potential employers, the information you are providing on your resume looks a little thin. We're going to take a look at how to build a good resume, without falling prey to the Canadian trade mark of ill timed humility.

The first thing most people want to put on their resume is their educational experience. This is because of the perception out there that many jobs require a certain amount of qualifications in order to hire a person. The truth is, the majority of employers will look at education only as a tie break. You don't need a whole lot of school to be suited to a job printing a custom license plate frame or other such task. So don't elaborate too much on your education. Put it in there, but if an employer wants to know more you will be asked at the interview.

What employers are more interested in is your experience relative to the position you are applying for. That means the part of your resume you really want to elaborate on is the work history part.

Here, make sure to outline every job that you have held. Include your positions, responsibilities, any awards, promotions, or raises you received. You should also include any special training you got while on a specific job. You might be versed in the chemical properties of a certain waste water treatment chemical, for example, which might give you an edge in a similar job.

Even if the new job you are applying for isn't related to that experience, detailing as much as possible will show a potential employer that you are involved and interested in what you do. That will definitely be eye catching within a pile of boring resumes, so remember to include everything even if it's something that seems mundane, like knowledge of radiation protection.

A lot of people will recommend getting volunteer experience as a way to build a good resume. We're of two minds about this. A volunteer position with a language school in Toronto or with a church may get you good references, and make people feel good about you. Whether they are of any practical use, however, has certainly not been proven. Not many volunteer positions help people crack their way into a paying job. Moreover, you will find that almost all of those who encourage volunteers to come help them out - from charities to churches - have a paid staff of their own. They just don't feel like paying anyone else.
